Farmers do not only aim to produce large shrimp, but also shrimp with good shell condition, firm body texture, strong appearance, and better market value. One common practice before harvest is the application of minerals, especially calcium and magnesium, to support shell hardening and improve the physical quality of harvested shrimp. This practice is especially important when shrimp are close to molting, when pond mineral levels are low, or when salinity has been diluted by rain or water exchange. Before harvest, shell condition becomes a major quality factor. Shrimp with firm shells are easier to handle, transport, grade, and process. Stronger shells also reduce the risk of physical damage during harvest, such as broken shell, soft body, loose head, or poor appearance. In these conditions, even if shrimp have reached market size, their harvest quality may decline. Soft shell, weak movement, poor molting recovery, and low body firmness can occur. Not all mineral products work the same way. For pre-harvest use, minerals should dissolve well and become available in the water quickly.
